Food Exchange Niagara in second year of service
In 2022 Food Exchange Niagara was initiated as a new program among Village of Hope Niagara, Open Arms Mission of Welland Inc and other Niagara Region non-profit, charity-based food providers, for balancing the variety, and quantity of foods available to our neighbours in need. As foods are donated to Village of Hope Niagara and others, sometimes in bulk, and especially following our food drives, we often find our shelves full but with surplus of some foods while lacking a desired variety, or when we receive a shipment of fresh produce, often times it's of a quantity that we cannot distribute before it would spoil, even with our capacity for refrigeration. Through regional partner consultations we're able to do a food exchange, balance inventories, better serving client families, offering a greater variety of foods, while reducing food waste, and improving our timely distribution of your food donations.
This year we've exchanged more than 5896.7kg/13000lb between our regional partners, reducing waste, andincreasing variety, for those we serve.
